These portraits of northern Vietnam's ethnic hill tribes - stretching from the misty peaks and valleys of regions like Pu Luong and Lai Châu (home to the Lự people) down toward Hanoi—capture one of Asia’s most culturally diverse highlands. These visual studies highlight distinct groups such as the Thai, Muong, Hmong, Dao, and Lự, whose unique identities are woven directly into their handcrafted attire, intricate headwear, and traditional silver adornments. These portraits tell stories of resilience, centuries-old weaving heritage, and the intimate relationship between highland communities and their surrounding mountain landscapes. I wandered of the 'beaten track' and met so many incredible people. As a grandparent the first two images of Nana babysitting demonstrated the wonderful family bond that exists throughout humanity.
